Classes take place throughout the year. To find out when our next course starts and to reserve a place we ask that you contact us either by telephone (01785 661265) or e-mail (finlex@btinternet.com). We will then ensure you enrol in the appropriate class and send you an application form. All places on our courses will be confirmed in advance.
Chase Dog Training has carried out an extensive risk assessment in conjunction with the training halls that we use and all precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of everyone attending class.
TRAINING:
Owning a well behaved dog requires a lot of time and patience on the part of the owner. To this end the KC Good Citizen Dog Scheme provides an excellent starting point. Using reward based methods, we always try to make our classes enjoyable for both you and your dog as we believe people (and dogs) learn much better in a relaxed and happy environment.
Class Times:
Wednesdays – Colwich Community Centre:
7.00-8.00 pm – Puppy Foundation
8.00-9.00 pm – Level 1 Bronze KC GCDS
Thursdays – Little Haywood & Colwich Village Hall
7.30 – 8.30 pm – Level 2 Silver/Gold KC GCDS
Some information about our Classes
Puppy Foundation
Puppies from 12 weeks to 6 months old are accepted onto the KC Puppy Foundation Course. This course covers:
- socialisation
- basic training, i.e. sit, down, walking on lead, recall, stay, wait
- food manners
- play
- owner responsibility & the law
- handling & grooming
- health matters
- puppy behaviour such as play biting, toilet training, jumping up, greeting visitors
Having owned a few puppies over the years we understand that sometimes the puppy experience does not run quite as smooth as people expect! You can be assured therefore that we are here to help you navigate through any problems you may be experiencing
All puppies on the Puppy Foundation Scheme are assessed weekly so no worries about having to take a test at the end in order to achieve your Certificate!
Finally we recommend “The Perfect Puppy” by Gwen Bailey as an excellent book for puppy owners or those looking to get a puppy – available from Amazon or other good book sellers.
Level 1 / KC Good Citizen Bronze
Level 1 consolidates the puppy training course but is also suitable for older dogs that have not done any formal training before. This level includes our own in-house Awards – Basic Skills 1, Intermediate Skills 2 and Advanced Skills 3. Exercises for the in-house awards are based on the KC Bronze scheme. There will also be an opportunity to gain the KC Bronze Award for those handlers and dogs who progress to that standard as all assessments are carried out by a Kennel Club A List Assessor at the end of each course.
Level 2 / KC Good Citizen Silver & Gold
This level continues on from the Bronze Award, offering greater control in situations indoors and outdoors and consolidating training already learned. Silver and Gold GCDS training forms part of these training sessions. In order to take a Silver or Gold test, dogs must have passed the previous levels, i.e. Bronze GCDS for the Silver Award and Bronze and Silver GCDS for the Gold Award. Tests are not automatically held at the end of each course but are arranged only when it is considered that enough dogs are ready to be tested at this advanced level. In addition we often combine other types of training in these sessions to provide some fun and further challenge for both dogs and handlers.
All test levels are carried out by KC trained GCDS “A” list Assessors.
Please note – some dogs can find formal training classes very stressful and this can manifest into challenging and disruptive behaviour. In this event we can advise on one-to-one or behavioural training with a suitable trainer/behaviorist.
